How to Get Certified for Medical Marijuana in Minnesota

Whether you take medical marijuana for anxiety or chronic pain, we’re sure you’re tired of worrying about getting caught using the recreational drug in Minnesota. We understand how frustrating it can be to face repercussions for responsible use.

At IndicaMD, we strive to make things much easier for patients across Minnesota. While recreational use is not legal in Minnesota, there has been a strong push for legalization. Amid calls for action, we’ve taken measures to ensure we play our part in helping patients ease their symptoms without feeling the all-too-familiar pang of guilt. This was made easier by way of Minnesota Executive Order 20-26 from March 31st, 2020, allowing telemedicine consultation for the purposes of medical marijuana certification in the state of Minnesota.

Our online medical practitioners can help you get a medical marijuana certification that’s valid for up to 12 months and can be easily renewed.

It’s important to note that a medical marijuana certification is state-issued and helps patients take medical marijuana. A medical marijuana certification is completely legal to have in 33 separate states—including Minnesota. Based upon your medical provider’s recommendation, you can safely procure and possess marijuana for medical use.

How Should I Get Started?

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, registering for a medical marijuana certification involves determining whether you have one of the following qualifying conditions for possessing the certification:

  • Cancer associated with severe pain, chronic pain, extreme vomiting, cachexia, nausea, or severe wasting
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Autism, if the DSM-V criteria for autism are met
  • Glaucoma
  • Intractable pain
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • PTSD
  • Terminal illness if the patient has a life expectancy of less than one year and the illness results in severe and chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Seizures
  • Extreme and frequent muscle spasms
  • ALS
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Sickle cell disease

At IndicaMD, we can help you undergo a medical practitioner’s evaluation by having a real-time video chat with our experienced providers, including doctors and other practitioners who can legally certify you for medical marijuana in the state of Minnesota. We facilitate the first and most important step; a video chat with an experienced physician to certify that you have a qualifying condition. Not all physicians can certify for medical cannabis, and we aim to make this crucial step as easy as possible.

Currently, we only offer telemedicine and virtual visits for our existing cannabis patients in Minnesota who require recertification online.

To begin, visit www.IndicaMD.com and sign-up with an email and password. We’ll have you fill out a short questionnaire that helps us gain more insight into your health, background, and medical history. After your visit with our physician, we’ll send your certification to the Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC).

You’ll then receive an email from the OMC with a link to register in the program and pay the annual registration fee online. Once complete, you’ll receive a confirmation of registration and receipt of payment. If you have any questions during this process, please call (651) 201-5598 and press 22 to speak with a representative of the OMC.

The OMC will process your application and you’ll receive a final approval email from the state authorities with your patient ID number and instructions to fill out a mandated survey before visiting a licensed dispensary. The State of Minnesota opted-out of a physical medical “card,” so you’ll just need your own government issued photo ID and this assigned patient ID number. You’re now ready to make an appointment at a nearby Cannabis Patient Center (CPC), often referred to as a “dispensary,” where you’ll be dispensed the medication!

If you are a first-time patient and require a marijuana certification, please schedule an in-person physical appointment with our doctor to qualify for certification.

Why are you waiting?! Get your medical marijuana certification in Minnesota by creating an account. Your information will be fully encrypted so you don’t have to worry about confidentiality and security (full HIPAA compliance assured).

If you have any questions, please feel free to give IndicaMD a call at (844) 930-2568 and we’ll take it from there!

On May 30, Gov. Tim Walz signed the bill that legalizes adult-use cannabis in Minnesota (for more details, visit the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management). The legislation includes good news for Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program patients:
  • Effective July 1, 2023, the annual enrollment fee will be eliminated.
  • Effective Aug. 1, 2023, a patient’s initial certification visit with a health care practitioner can be conducted via telemedicine.
  • Effective March 1, 2025, patients will be required to get recertified for their qualifying medical condition every three years, instead of every year.
  • Effective March 1, 2025, the age for registered caregivers to purchase cannabis flower will be 18, rather than 21.

While the tax on adult-use cannabis product sales will be 10% (in addition to state and local sales taxes), medical cannabis products will continue to be tax-free.

The Medical Cannabis Program will establish an alternative certification procedure for veterans who receive care from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to confirm that the veteran has been diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition. The new application procedure will be effective Jan. 1, 2024. We will share more about this procedure at a later date.
